The duration of your pregnancy during pre-natal, delivery and post-natal is taken care of by the midwives. They will see to the wellbeing of the pregnant Mom and the unborn child in the prenatal period, give support in labour and deliver your precious baby to the best of the ability. The midwives will also render aftercare in the post-natal period within their scope of practice within our Maternity Obstetric Unit (MOU).

Patients will be required to sign an indemnity clause before they are admitted.

The Home uses both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to pain management during labour.

Pharmacological - Home uses Entonox which is directed at eliminating the physical sensation of a labour pain.

Non-pharmacological – Is largely directed at increasing comfort enabling you to cope with the pain. The Home uses various proved approaches to assist you.

Admission Procedure

Referral System

Should a complication arise during delivery or postnatal period, the Criteria for Government Referrals which has been agreed to by ALL STATE Level 1, 2 and Specialist Level Government Hospitals will be adhered to.

Metro Maternity Home undertakes to make a smooth transfer to Government Hospital should the need arise. Transfer to State Hospitals will be to the nearest hospital.

Should you be able to afford and prefer PRIVATE Hospital transfer, then early contact with your Obstetrician needs to be prioritised so that transfer, if need be, is discussed. The Private Obstetrics/Gynaecology Specialist and Private Hospital admission and fees is the responsibility of the Patient/Partner.

Once transfer is complete, the referral hospital/Obstetrician will be responsible for your admission and higher level of care.

Labour & Delivery

Metro Maternity Home protocols linked with Department of Health and SASOG protocols are adhered to. The attending midwife will be ultimately responsible and co-operation in the best interest of expectant mother and family is requested and appreciated.

Labour ward admission in active labour:

  • Patient is moved to the labour ward if they are not already there.
  • Pain relief is available as offered by the midwife depending on various factors that the midwife must take into consideration.
  • 1 Birth companion is allowed to be present before and after delivery while patient is in the labour ward.

Transfer to higher level care or hospital after being admitted in labour:

  • Once it is established that contact needs to be made with the backup referral hospital due to a risk or complication detected, the midwife would then make contact and follow instructions accordingly.
  • If the above should occur, an admission fee of R500 is charged and further charges are billed for monitoring labour, assessments done and transfer.
