Metro Maternity Home admission guideline

How To Book

  • All patients must be referred by an obstetrician.
  • Bookings are accepted from 32 weeks.
  • Patient must have a further consultation with an obstetrician at 36 weeks.
  • To book Contact Metro Maternity Home at 063 603 6864 or 081 514 4597, a form will be emailed, faxed or picked up at the Reception at Metro Maternity Home for your completion together with the copy of the fees.
  • The following documents are required:
    • Completed booking forms.
    • Referral letter.
    • Proof of payment- Banking details are displayed at the bottom of the booking form.
      MUST BE: email to Info@metromaternityhome.co.za OR fax to 043 743 0668 OR delivered at the front desk of Metro Maternity Home
    • Signed refund form.
  • To secure your booking the full amount MUST be paid before the 34th week.
  • The fees include:
    • Use of the facility, supplies and monitoring
    • Pre-natal care
    • Pain relief
    • Delivery by the home's midwife
    • Post-delivery care
    • Visit by a paediatrician
    • Refundable ambulance fee
    • NOTE: Fee does not include delivery by private midwife and obstetrician

Medical Aids

We do accepts medical aid patients who have first received pre-authorisation from their medical aid before they book.

Admission Process

  • When patient is in labour, she MUST call Metro Maternity Home at 063 603 6864, 081 514 4597 or 083 272 0012.
  • If the baby is to be delivered by a private midwife, the patient must also notify her to avail herself at Metro Maternity Home.
  • Security will open for the patient when she arrives at the home.
  • The patient MUST produce an ID and a referral letter from attending obstetrician; a file will be opened for the patient.
  • The patient will be assessed for labour and if is in labour she will be admitted, otherwise she will be discharged.
  • To secure your booking the full amount MUST be paid before the 34th week.
  • Only one member of the family is allowed to stay in the labour ward with the patient, but additional members are allowed after the delivery.

What To Bring

  • Antenatal records
  • Identification Document
  • For Mom’s comfort
    Comfortable clothing
    Dressing gown and slippers
    Toiletries, i.e. toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
    New face cloth and towel
    *Mothers are welcome to bring items that will make them feel at home, e.g. CD’s/music, bedding, etc.

  • For Baby’s comfort
    Baby clothing may be worn at the maternity home at your own risk
    Bottles, formula and steriliser if you choose not to breastfeed
    Baby grow, vest and hat
    2 receiving blankets
    Extra blanket in winter, cap, booties/socks

During Admission

A Midwife will be available throughout the process. At any stage if a complication develops the midwife will explain to the patient and call a doctor. Should the doctor confirm that the patient cannot deliver at Metro Maternity Home a referral will be arranged by the midwife. The fees already include ambulance from Metro Maternity to Frere Hospital and if patient goes to Cecilia Makiwane an additional R250 will have to be added at the patients cost.

Disposable nappies - 5
Surgical spirits
Cotton roll - 1 small roll
Sanitary towels - 1 packet

Discharge Procedure

Patients will be admitted for a maximum period of six (6) hours post-delivery. Should a patient require to stay longer due to unforeseen circumstances must advise the home, and at the discretion of the home a fee might be levied.
A discharge letter with the details of the delivery will be given to you to present for your post-natal check up
Road to Health card and discharge letter will be given to you to present at the clinic for the vaccination of your baby

Refund Procedure

Refunds are paid to the patient two weeks of being transferred to another facility subject to the necessary deductions being done.

Deductions will include admission fee, and further charges for monitoring labour, assessments done and transfer fees.
